Shooting and Rebounds

Dear Netball Coach,

"If you want sharp shooters in your team you need to work on balance, aim and technique. Top shooters use the whole body to make the shot."

This edition of the coachingNetball newsletter looks at some of the drills that coachingNetball has to develop shooting and rebounding skills.

Follow Your Shot

White player 1 throws to Blue player 1, then runs into circle and receives ball back. White player 1 then shoots, collects ball, passes to Red player 1 and joins the back or the Red players line. Red player 1 does the same from the other side.

The aim is to receive the shot, quickly adjust your body position to get into a good shooting position and make the shot.

Having made the shot react quickly to make the rebound, get into position and pass to the oppposite side.

Mark and Rebound

This drill gets the player to think about where they position themselves relative to the defender / attacker in order to gain an advantage in getting the shot away / moving the attacker away from being in a position get a free shot away.

Focus on dynamic change of direction, getting into position early and reacting quickly to make the rebound.

One shooter from each side runs out and into the circle. X passes the ball to the free shooter who balances then shoots. Defender should defend the shot and also work to receive rebound and then return the ball to X.

Add a defence on each shooter as a progression.

Popping Over

Blue shooter (Blue 1) has the ball inside the circle.
Pretend to shoot, with white 1 defending, instead of the shot, blue 1 pops the ball over the defender to blue goal attack(number 2) who has held her position with the defence behind her.
Defenders stay in for 10 attacks. Attackers pass and follow and then go to the back of the line after shot.

Coaching Points:

  • Blue number 2 must work to take up her position ball side of her defender
  • All players shift one position after the shot has been made.
  • One shooter from each side runs out and into the circle. X passes the ball to the free shooter who balances then shoots. Defender should defend the shot and also work to receive rebound and then return the ball to X.

Add a defence on each shooter as a progression.
